Addition of Category:Alyssum to many images[edit]

Hi 20 upper, please do not overcategorize, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Categories#Over-categorization. You added Category:Alyssum to several images which are already in subcategories of this category, such as Category:Alyssum montanum in File:Alyssum montanum subsp. montanum sl3.jpg. I'll revert those as soon as I find the time, but please do not add categories without considering the possibility of over-categorization. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 08:56, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sorry, won't happen again. 20 upper 10:39, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I removed all the images from category Category:Alyssum. I placed a few in Category:Unidentified Alyssum or Category:Lobularia maritima or subcategories thereof. Lobularia maritima is a plant that is frequently called "Alyssum" or "Sweet Alyssum". Most images had their species categories; so I just reverted your edits. Please rather do not place anything directly in genus categories (such as Category:Alyssum) unless there is a species ID but no appropriate category for it. There are more specific categories for unidentified plants, such as Category:Unidentified Alyssum or Category:Unidentified Brassicaceae. Thanks. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 11:53, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please don’t despair![edit]

Hello 20 upper, in this FP nomination you wrote: “what a failure I am”. Please don’t feel depressed because that nomination was not successful. In no way you are a failure; at most the nomination was one. ;–)

I understand that you are not satisifed because ca. 3 of your nominations were successful, 4 failed. But honestly, that’s normal, for several reasons.

  • It’s really difficult, even for experienced regulars, to predict whether a certain photo will make it nor not. Sometimes a technically modest photo succeeds because people love the mood, sometimes an almost perfect photos fails. Sometimes we take offence because there is already a similar FP, sometimes almost similar photos are promoted. I don’t say this in order to criticize our FPC fellows, I just diagnose it. It’s often the certain something which determines whether a photo will succeed or not. And, after all, it means that we voters are not deterministic machines, and that’s good ;–)
  • Some people are almost always successful with their nominations just because they are very cautious. For example I nominate photos only when I am almost sure they will succeed. But in the end this is bad because it means that I nominate far less interesting photos than I could and should. It’s better to be more brave and to nominate also some photos which are rather risky candidates, but are nevertheless interesting. This way we get more failures, of course, but also a broader selection of photos and fresh ideas.

Therefore please continue to nominate photos and don’t despair! And in any case don’t take the failure of a nomination personally. That a nomination fails does not mean that people don’t like you. On the contrary, I think you are already an highly esteemed FPC regular. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 08:58, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Aristeas: Thank you so much; it made me feel much better. Since I've been experiencing mental problems due to real-life problems over the past month, Commons and video games have served as an escape for me. When I noticed a vote against my FPC nomination, my heartbeat would immediately increase. In FPC, I'll keep making nominations, but this time I'll also look at other nominations to see what people are seeking. I'll now browse Commons for potential candidates and hopefully nominate them tomorrow. 20 upper 13:59, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand this very well – when somebody votes against one of my own photos, I experience the same heartbeat … and because of this I nominate them only rarely (which is rather cowardly of me, of course). … If you are unsure, and want to reduce the amount of failed nominations, you could try to contact some other experienced users here which are interested in wildlife photography and discuss with them which photos would have a good chance, before nominating the photos. I have done this with two fellows regarding Wiki Loves Folklore photos; we are using a list for collecting potential candidates and disussing them; this is totally legal (we have no private interests, just want to find the best candidates) and works quite well. Now you would need the same for wildlife photos. I cannot help you here much, as I am not a wildlife expert, and I would not try to contact our most prolific wildlife photographer (who is interested mostly in his own photos ;–)). But maybe you could ask Rhododendrites, who is an excellent bird etc. photographer with a good eye, or Iifar, Llez, Tomer T … I don’t know, but maybe some of them could be interested in that idea (disussing good wildlife photos in order to find the best FPC candidates) and would join you. Just my 2 cent. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 15:03, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, 20 upper!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Street artist. (52318792385).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
