Portraits in Red: Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’s Painting Project

The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum presents the exhibit “Portraits in Red: Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’s Painting Project” by Nayana LaFond from May 19 – July 8, 2023. Nayana LaFond is an artist of Anishinaabe, Abenaki and Mi’kmaq descent who lives in Massachusetts. With the permission of the families and/or victims, Nayana has painted the portraits of about 90 people around the country who have been victimized. To date, the work has only been shown on the East Coast of the United States. She is doing this to keep the memories of those lost alive and to shed light on the issues connected to this crises. Approximately 20 women from Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Northern California and 20 women from around the nation will be represented in the 40 portraits that will constitute the Pacific Northwest tour.
