Fishing, kite flying, sand sculpting and geocaching are among the highlighted activities
LONG BEACH PENINSULA, Wash. – March 29, 2018 – From building sand castles to flying kites on a seemingly endless stretch of sand, the Long Beach Peninsula is a great choice for family playtime outdoors. Several family-friendly events taking place on the peninsula this year make getting outside that much more entertaining.
“Engaging in outdoor activities together is a great way to knit close families,” says Andi Day, executive director, Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau. “Our twenty eight mile beach is an ideal place for families to play and have fun together.”
Among the highlighted family events are the following:
· Black Lake Fishing Derby (April 28) is a kids-only, friendly competition marking the start of fishing season. Sign up is required for prizes; early registration ensures a t-shirt. www.ilwaco-wa.gov
· SandSations (July 18-22), a sand sculpting extravaganza, culminates with teams (including families and children) transforming plots of sand near the high-tide mark into fantastic and fanciful creations for recognition and prizes. · Washington State International Kite Festival (Aug. 20-26) is among the top summer events on the West Coast. Families can take kite flying lessons and workshops while being inspired by internationally renowned flyers, mass ascensions, lighted night flies and more. www.kitefestival.com
· Cache Dash Splash IV (Sept. 14-16) tests geocaching skills while leading families on a “treasure hunt” all around the Long Beach Peninsula. Pre-event email signup is at http://cachedashsplash.com.
The City of Long Beach also hosts Summerfest – a free, ongoing series of family activities throughout the downtown – on weekends from May 26 to September 3. Small-stage, live entertainment, puppetry, chalk art, craft making, and more make this quintessential beach town all the more festive.
“It’s best to book lodging well in advance,” advises Day. “Family events are always very well attended and some visitors book more than a year out.”
