Henry Harrison Tinker bought the land claim that would one day become Long Beach in 1880 and named it Tinkertown. A resort village from the start, Tinkertown welcomed summertime travelers on the narrow gauge Clamshell Railroad that ran up the length of the peninsula from 1889 to 1930. Businesses dotted the main walk, including Marsh’s Free Museum (a favorite attraction to this day).
