Welcome!
Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Image Tagging Image:Aundrea Fimbres.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Aundrea Fimbres.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. - Hm... Next time I'll be checking for such things. Thanks for the info.--Vaya 18:21, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Screenshots
Hello! The image being shown on the screen was basically film being shown in realtime: once what is happening on stage is put on film that data on the film is copyrighted. The camera angle, specific shot, etc. is unique to the film, and is the work of the person/company filming. It is the same as if you are standing next to someone looking at the Rocky Mountains, and they take a photograph (which they now own the copyright to), and then you take a photo of their photograph because they got a better angle than you did. The original work is their photograph and the copyright belongs to them, thus your image depicts a copyrighted work.
Now, I am not sure if this is set in stone (policy, on-wiki discussion, etc) anywhere; but if it is, or there is evidence to support the contrary, feel free to let me know. Right now as far as I know the image displayed on-screen was copyrighted and thus the photograph of it depicts a copyrighted work, but if you find that images like that are allowable I will certainly undelete the image :) -- Editor at Large • talk 14:13, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

We can not accept images from flickr that are marked NC or ND. Please do not upload these images. You can ask the flickr user to change the license terms, otherwise they are not free enough for us. Thank you for understanding. MECU≈talk 12:33, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
- NC does mean non commercial, but ND mean no derivatives. This page explains what is allowed and what isn't quite well I believe: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=fromflickr MECU≈talk 12:47, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: Permissions
I'd accept it. Hopefully it's visible in some way on flickr and not through flickr mail, like in the image comments. The best would be to get the user to change the license at flickr and then upload it and then get it flickr reviewed and then the user can change the license back, but this would work too. MECU≈talk 14:46, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Flickr pictures
When uploading Flickr pictures you have to put {{flickrreview}} on the summary box, beside the license tag. Thank you, Dantadd✉ 15:22, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Why are you deleting it? QuasyBoy 20:30, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Re: Mug shots
Generally they are not works of the US Federal Government, and done by state or local governments so they are not free. The PD-USGov tag is not relevant. Only if it is the work of the FBI and can be sourced to them, which is sometimes difficult because they will take other groups images, then does the tag apply. You can speedy delete, or remove the license and then mark it no license. I've done that to hundred of images that have this tag because people think a school is a work of the federal government (for example) so they put the tag on. I've never once heard a complaint or heard back on the images, so they likely could get deleted. If you were nice(r than me), you could recommend fair use, but it would be a tough sell as important to the article. MECU≈talk 12:44, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

File source is not properly indicated: File:M-84_povlaćenje_kosovo.jpg
This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:M-84_povlaćenje_kosovo.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
[[:File:M-84_povlaćenje_kosovo.jpg]] ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Okay Spellcast...
Listen. I know it's late for me to be talking to you about this almost a year later, but you really need to understand something. I am not 98E, nor am I related to him in any way, shape, or form. Our IPs are a lot different. I was unblocked on here because I proved very well that I am not 98E. So now that it's been proven, there's no real reason for me to stay blocked on Wikipedia. I may have had a few disputes over there, but other than that, I'm innocent. And it's been proven. And, if you unblock me on Wikipedia, I will forgive you for ever blocking me in the first place. So, may I be unblocked, please? XxJoshuaxX (talk) 19:37, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
- That's not entirely correct. You were being given the benefit of the doubt, by Giggy. — Kanonkas // talk // CCD // 21:31, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, but the thing is, my IP is much different from the one that 98E used. XxJoshuaxX (talk) 00:26, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- And BTW, I forgot to mention something. Shortly after I was blocked on Wikipedia, Hundredalexander, one of 98E's suspected socks, e-mailed me with his side of the story. Wanna hear what he told me? XxJoshuaxX (talk) 14:33, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- So, I stop coming to Commons for 6 whole months and I come back to see still no response. This is seriously unfair. My block on Wikipedia was completely unjustified and I need to be unblocked. XxJoshuaxX (talk) 23:24, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 14:14, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Documentary Film for the National Geographic Channel
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am an assistant producer from Infocus Asia, a production house based in Singapore. We are currently producing a documentary series for the National Geographic Channel on urban legends and history around Asia.
In my episode I'm looking at Diu, India, and one of the things we are exploring in this episode is the European colonisation of Asia and trade that was brought with it.
I was looking for paintings of European trading ships in Asia to be used in the film as Archive, and came across your image of the Portugese Carracking off the Coast - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Portuguese_Carracks_off_a_Rocky_Coast.jpg
I was wondering if you could help me with a question. It is declared on your page that the image is in the public domain and free for use, and i understand that all works produced before the 1800s are in the Public Domain.
However you also credited that the source of this image is the National Martime Museum in Greenwich. I was wondering why that would be the case, and if that means Greenwich holds a copyright to the original painting? Or do they hold rights to the image of the painting, which is what is featured on your page?
Thank you for your help, looking forward to hearing from you!
Kindest Regards Candice Email: candice@infocusasia.com
